Phippsburg man, two small children injured in single-car crash Monday

PHIPPSBURG, Maine — A Phippsburg man remained at Mid Coast Hospital on Monday afternoon after a single-car crash Monday morning that also injured a 3-year-old child and a 7-month-old infant.

Edward Guthro, 43, was headed toward Bath just before 8:30 a.m. when he reportedly lost control of a 2004 Subaru four-door near the Phippsburg Sportsman’s Club. The car went into the soft shoulder, overcorrected and hit a tree near Clifford Road, said Chief Deputy Brett Strout of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

The two children, whose relationship to Guthro was unclear, were in child-safety seats, but were still injured. They were treated at Mid Coast Hospital and released, according to a hospital spokesman. Guthro was still in the emergency room Monday afternoon.

The crash is being reconstructed by the Bath Police Department, Strout said, and Cpl. Ian Alexander of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is leading an investigation. Strout said the crash is not believed to be alcohol-related.
