LEWISTON, Maine — A Pierce Street man was arrested Thursday and charged with assaulting a man with a bat the night before.

Rasaun Hampton, 37, was charged with aggravated assault. He is accused of hitting a man in the head with a baseball bat during a fight at 143 Bartlett St.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a gash to his head, police said. He was treated and later released.

The attack was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. When police arrived, they found the victim bleeding from his head. The assailant had fled. Police searched for Hampton throughout the night and on Thursday found him in the downtown area.

According to court records, Hampton has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for aggravated drug trafficking and assault. After his arrest Thursday, he was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
