Portland firefighters respond to apparent fire at Gilman Street building

By Seth Koenig, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland firefighters responded to a four-unit residence at 10 Gilman St. Thursday evening, where one resident said he was alarmed by the sight of dark smoke.

Firefighters were focusing on the top floor of the four-story structure across the street from the Maine Medical Center campus Thursday, with a ladder truck extending to the roof of the building and a number of responders visible investigating the highest points.

By 5:20 p.m., water from the firefighters’ hoses could be seen raining down from top-floor windows and doors on the back side of the building.

“All of a sudden, smoke started pouring out the back window,” said one man, who declined to give his name, but said he lived in the building.

No cause of the apparent fire, news of injuries or damage estimates were immediately available.

According to the city’s online assessor’s database, the 10 Gilman St. property is valued at $266,500.
