By Jesse Scardina

WATERVILLE — An Augusta man was charged with arson in connection with a fire last month that destroyed his apartment and displaced five other tenants, according to a press release from the state fire marshal’s office.

Stephen Cormier, 57, of Augusta was charged with arson on Wednesday morning after Waterville police took him into custody. Cormier was staying at a homeless shelter in Waterville, according to police.

Fire investigators said Cormier set fire to his living-room couch on March 21 inside his Northern Avenue apartment. Cormier was treated for smoke inhalation and the apartment complex was torn down.
