LEWISTON, Maine — A woman was attacked with a knife in her Blake Street apartment early Thursday and minutes later, police arrested a man on Elm Street more than a mile away.
The victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, although the nature of her injuries was not immediately clear.
The drama began at about 12:15 a.m. when a woman called police and said a man had just killed a woman in an apartment at 153 Blake St.
Police who responded were told the suspect was last seen running up Blake Street, wearing a suit and carrying a knife. Officers fanned out across the area, learning more about the suspect attacker as they went.
Early reports were that the victim had recently taken out a protection-from-abuse order against the man who attacked her, police said.
At about 12:30 a.m., an officer reported spotting a man who fit the description of the suspect on Elm Street, near the intersection at Main Street. Several officers responded and the man was taken into custody.
Back on Blake Street, police were continuing to investigate, speaking with potential witnesses at the scene of the attack. The building is a four-story tenement near the corner of Walnut Street.
One man standing on the corner said he had no idea what had occurred.
“It was all quiet and then suddenly, red lights and blue lights everywhere,” he said.
The names of the victim and suspect were not immediately available.
Wednesday night was a busy one for Lewiston police and it didn’t abate with the arrival of Thursday morning. At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, several officers responded to a reported brawl at the parking garage on Canal Street.
Just over an hour later, a man was attacked with a baseball bat on Bartlett Street. Police were still investigating that incident when the alleged knifing on Blake Street was reported.
