Mail inside 5 bags of trash illegally discarded in Orono leads to littering charges

By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff

ORONO, Maine — A resident on Penobscot Street called police Saturday night to say someone had illegally dropped off five bags of trash and the responding officer found mail inside that led to an Old Town woman, Orono police Sgt. Scott Scripture said Tuesday.

Tina Ireland, 45, denied any knowledge of the illegal trash disposal, reported at about 5:40 p.m., but “letters and other articles with names on it” linked the bags to her, the sergeant said. She was charged with littering but was not arrested.

Old Town passed a pay-as-you-throw trash initiative last year that has resulted in trash being dumped in other communities, the Orono police sergeant said.

“That is one problem with pay-as-you go,” Scripture said. “That is why a lot of stores with Dumpsters have locks on them now.
