Six swimmers from the Bangor YMCA swim team, coached by Matt Cook, will be competing in the YMCA Nationals scheduled April 3-6 in Greensboro, N.C.

“Many of these swimmers decided to train specifically for this meet this year. They set their goals early in the season and through hard work, they are prepared to compete at the highest level that the YMCA has to offer,” the first-year head coach said in an email.

Representing the Bangor YMCA at the national meet will be David Smallwood, who has qualified in five events, and Emma Waddell, an eight-event qualifier. Also competing will be Josh Williams, Liam Reading, Hannah Wood and Julianna McDonald. A swimmer may compete in four events.

‚ÄúThis meet has about 1,500 swimmers, each from YMCAs all over the country. There are future Olympic qualifiers who compete at this meet. Many college coaches from around the country attend to see who will round out their college team rosters,” Cook noted.

American Olympic sprinter Cullen Jones will speak to the swimmers during opening ceremonies.

Wells also was a member of the ninth-place 400 medley relay (3:08.4) and the 14th-place 200 medley relay (1:26.1) teams.

Wells was a swim standout for the Bath YMCA and Morse High of Bath.

Michigan, coached by Mike Bottom, set a U.S. Open record and an American record in the 200 medley relay at 1:22.2.

Other records in the meet were set in the 100 free (40.7) by Vlad Morozov of Southern California and in the 200 breaststroke (1:48.6) by Kevin Cordes of Arizona. California, the defending champions, finished second.
