FORT KENT, Maine — Jared Hafford, who helped the Easton High School boys basketball team upset defending state champion Jonesport-Beals in last month’s Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinals en route to a semifinal berth, plans to continue his career in the sport at the University of Maine at Fort Kent next winter.

Hafford, a 6-foot-2-inch senior guard, led his team in scoring and assists this season as coach Dillon Kingsbury’s Bears finished with a 16-5 record after suffering a two-point loss to Hodgdon in the regional semifinals.

Hafford has represented Easton at several Maine State Hot Shot Competitions, was a Central Aroostook High School Preseason Tournament all-star and played in the recent Aroostook County all-star game.

Off the court, Hafford is on track to be the class salutatorian at Easton High School when he graduates in June,

He also is a member of National Honor Society and Student Council and is vice president of the Varsity Club.

“We love Jared’s skill set on and off the court,” said UMFK men’s basketball coach Eric Werntgen in a press release. “He is an exceptional student, shoots the ball at a high percentage, handles the ball well and plays with a great basketball I.Q. The Bengals are happy to welcome him into our basketball family.”
