FREEPORT, Maine — A robbery at the Yarmouth Rite Aid pharmacy on Route 1 led to a high-speed chase and crash just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Freeport police said.

The incident marks the second robbery at the Rite Aid pharmacy — and the third pharmacy robbery in Yarmouth — since December.

After Wednesday’s robbery, a man and a woman fled northbound on Interstate 295 in a black Mitsubishi, Freeport Police Chief Gerald Schofield said at the scene.

A high-speed chase ensued, and the vehicle crashed on the offramp at Exit 22 and ended up in a ditch, police said.

The man in the car was taken to Maine Medical Center by Freeport Rescue, while the woman was taken to an undisclosed hospital. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland reported late Wednesday that the driver was Dylan Libby, 21, and his passenger was Madeline Damon, 18, both of North Yarmouth, although the two had recently moved to Bangor. Both are hospitalized with multiple injuries.

A Maine State Police K-9 and handler arrived at the scene and searched the area around the crash.

The on- and offramps at Exit 22 northbound were shut down for at least an hour.

Charges have yet to be lodged against the two. Yarmouth police are expected to file charges in connection with the robbery in the near future.

On December 19, 2012, $5,000 worth of drugs from the Hannaford Bros. pharmacy in Yarmouth was reported stolen.

Two days later, a man stole “synthetic narcotics” from the Yarmouth Rite Aid, The Forecaster reported.

Morrell declined to say what was stolen on Wednesday. No further information was immediately available.
