SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A former state representative accused of assaulting and robbing a woman during an argument is facing charges, police said.

Christopher Muse, 56, of South Portland, is charged with assault and robbery, police Lt. Frank Clark said Monday afternoon.

Clark said the 44-year-old woman was someone whom Muse had known years ago and recently reconnected with.

The pair had gotten together Friday evening and while out for a walk on a path in the city, a disagreement led to Muse knocking the woman down and kicking her in the head, the lieutenant said.

Muse also took an undisclosed amount of cash from the woman, Clark said.

The woman went to the police station and filed a report just after 1 p.m. Sunday, Clark said, and shortly after, officers went to Muse’s residence and arrested him.

He was taken to Cumberland County Jail, where he is being held pending a court appearance.
