Bingham fires prompt arson investigation

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BINGHAM, Maine — Fire officials are investigating a pair of fires that occurred in the Somerset County town of Bingham on Saturday night.

Sgt. Joel Davis of the state fire marshal’s office said Monday the fires were set within two hours of each other and authorities are investigating both as arsons.

The first fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m.

Davis said the town’s garage was destroyed by one fire while the interior of an ice cream shop was heavily damaged. The estimated $500,00 in damage was done to the two buildings, the sergeant added.

Davis said the buildings are located a half-mile from each other, with the ice cream stand on Main Street next to the Riverside Inn while the town garage is on Owens Street.

No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made, the sergeant said.

“It’s still early on [in the investigation],” Davis said.
