PORTLAND – Isabelle McCarthy Smith passed away March 23, 2013, in Portland after a lengthy illness. Isabelle was born in Bangor, the youngest of six children of the late James Justin McCarthy and Emma Russell McCarthy.
She graduated from John Bapst High School and worked for various physicians at Bangor Osteopathic Hospital for several years. On Oct. 20, 1949, Isabelle married Edwin F. They later relocated to Scarborough and divided their time between Maine and their winter home in Parrish, Fla.
Isabelle is survived by her three children: daughters, Deborah D. Smith of Portland and Kathryn I. Smith of Scarborough, and her son, E. Terrance Smith and his wife, Barbara Linnehan Smith, of Portland. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Lelma Russell of Davis, Calif., and Barbara Smith of North Fort Myers, Fla.; as well as multiple nieces and nephews; and by her good friend, Nellie Romano, who filled so many hours with happiness. In addition to her husband, Isabelle was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Ruth Gagnon, Helen McCarthy, Joan Sheehan, James McCarthy and Eugene McCarthy, and their respective spouses. The family thanks the compassionate direct care staff who attended to Isabelle for the past five and a half years. Their many kindnesses to Isabelle and her family will always be gratefully appreciated.
