The Bangor Daily News has announced its 2013 lineup of BDN Maine events, which run the gamut from food and cooking to winter sports, to be held each month at locations in Bangor, Augusta and Portland.
In press conferences held Thursday morning at Coespace in downtown Bangor and the Portland Expo in Portland, BDN Maine Events Producer Pat Lemieux, BDN Portland Multimedia Representative Laurie Trifoso, and Ellie Barker, the company’s events sponsor coordinator, unveiled 12 events designed to highlight the many facets of life in Maine.
“Our goal is to entertain, engage and energize everyone from outdoors and humor enthusiasts to gardening and cooking fans to sports and tech experts,” said Lemieux. “We also have a strong public service component that will allow nonprofit community organizations to benefit from the publicity and traffic that each event will generate.”
The lineup will kick off April 5 with the three-day Maine Garden Show & Spring Fling — the revamped version of the Bangor Garden Show, which ran for more than 30 years at the Bangor Auditorium.
This year’s event will feature the same array of Maine gardening and landscape businesses, which will transform the auditorium into a verdant paradise. The event also has grown to include restaurants, Maine craft beer companies, outdoor recreation businesses and more.
Presented by Bangor-based New England Home Health Care, the Garden Show will feature live music headlined by Maine’s own Mallett Brothers Band.
Admission is $5, and the show runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
“This will be a weekend garden party of spring music, food and fun as Bangor’s annual garden show grows to include beer and barbecue, golf simulators, an array of kid- and family-friendly activities, and live music — headlined by the Mallett Brothers Band,” said Barker.
In May, the attention turns to the great Maine outdoors with the first BDN Maine Outdoors Expo, set for May 4-5 at the Portland Expo.
“This gear and travel extravaganza for the adventurer will feature Maine’s premier display of the newest in outdoors gear, fashions and personalities from the worlds of hunting, fishing, BMXing, hiking, climbing and kayaking,” said Barker.
The 2013 schedule continues with the BDN Maine Adventure Race, an “Amazing Race” style event set for June 2 in downtown Portland; the 2013 Best of Maine event, which will showcase the winners of the BDN’s upcoming Best of Maine reader vote, set for June 26 in Augusta; and the Miss Adventure women’s lifestyle showcase, set for July 12-14 in downtown Portland.
In August, BDN Maine will help produce the What’s Next Conference in downtown Bangor during the 2013 KahBang Festival. The conference, set for Aug. 8-10, is presented by Bangor Savings Bank and aims to combine the music and arts of KahBang with a two-day conference focusing on creativity and technology and how they relate to business, music, film, social media and gaming.
BDN Maine then will team up with the Car Tour and Drive-In in conjunction with the Greater Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau’s annual Wheels on the Waterfront car show. On Friday, Sept. 6, hundreds of the classic cars that will be on display during Saturday’s Wheels on the Waterfront will tour the area.
Then car owners will gather for a drive-in-themed dinner and entertainment event — which will be open to the public — featuring a celebrity who just happens to be a fan of classic cars.
Other events include the Snow Sports Spectacular set for Sept. 20-22 at the Portland Expo; the BDN Maine Man Expo, set for Sept. 27-29 at the Cross Center in Bangor; the BDN Maine Comedy Crawl set for Oct. 5 in Portland; the BDN Maine Sports Showcase on Nov. 16 in Bangor; and a Food & Cooking Expo in December.
