NEWPORT – Arlene M. Lander, 85, died March 20, 2013, at a Pittsfield health care facility after a long illness. Arlene was born Aug. 20, 1927, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Wesley E. and June A. (Rand) Braley Sr.
She was educated in East Newport schools. Arlene married Albert L. Lander in Newport, May 31, 1947. He predeceased her April 25, 1984. Arlene was employed as a waitress and cook for many years in local restaurants: A and A Restaurant, Newport, Raymond’s Coffee House, Newport, and The Log Cabin Diner, Newport. Arlene came from a large family and family always came first to her. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for all her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading.
Arlene is survived by three children and their spouses, Dianna and Marvin Preble of Lamoine, Wanda and Dana Blair of Newport and Norman and Kim Lander of Newport; four brothers and their wives, Eugene and Bunny Braley of Newport, Gary and Patty Braley of Newport, Harry and Evelyn Braley of Newport and Max and Linda Braley of Rowley, Mass.; three sisters and their spouses, Marie and Wendell Braley of Newport, Donna Jones of Exeter and Carol and Bob Plohr of Penobscot; seven grandchildren, Lee Lander, Ricky Witham, Ryan Witham, Jon Blair, Marvin Preble Jr., Spencer Preble and Dawnise Kennedy; 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan Jr., Lauren, Greg, Brooks, Addi, Heather, Amber, Jenny, Rebecca and Richard; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Arlene was predeceased by her husband Albert; granddaughter, Kasey Lander; and great-grandson, Darren.
A celebration of Arlene’s life will be held 1 p.m.Sunday, March 24, at Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Hall, 82 North St., Newport. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the Kasey Lander Fund, care of Gary Braley, 21 Lake Ave., Newport, ME 04953.
