Bangor resident to mark 100th birthday

BANGOR — Katharine “Kae” MacKenzie Hill, a Bangor resident since 1936, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday, March 24. Mrs. Hill resides at Winterberry Heights.

She was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. She attended Nursing School at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (affiliated with McGill University), where she met her future husband, Allison Hill, a resident at the hospital, when he performed an emergency appendectomy for her one Christmas Eve. She became a registered nurse in the Province of Quebec in November 1935.

After marrying, Dr. and Mrs. Hill moved to his hometown of Bangor, where she became an American citizen in 1941. She settled in as wife and mother of three children. She kept the home fires burning during WWII while Dr. Hill served overseas.

Mrs. Hill ran Dr. Hill’s medical office in a wing of their home, while performing many volunteer jobs, including as a member of the Eastern Maine General Hospital Auxiliary, Junior League of Bangor, and PEO, officer and board member of the Penobscot Valley Health Association, board member of Bangor Humane Society, and board member of the Phillips Strickland House senior living facility. In 1991, she received the Louise P. Hopkins Award from PVHA for her high caliber of service.

Mrs. Hill also took a great interest in the arts, exposing her family to all that was available in Bangor and (reflecting her Canadian heritage), she loved the University of Maine hockey team as an enthusiastic season ticket holder for many years.

Mrs. Hill remains interested in the community and continues to enjoy taking rides around town and going out to lunch. She is blessed with good health, and is an inspiration to her family, Carolyn Rogers of Hebron, Conn., Sally Reed of Bangor and Ross Hill of New York City. They will be joined by her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren from Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, her sister-in-law Barbara Hill of Scarborough, and niece Alison Sweeney of Alpharetta, Ga., for a birthday lunch to honor Mrs. Hill at Lucerne Inn, a favorite gathering place for the family over the years.
