SOUTH PORTLAND – John C. Hardy Sr., 77, has gone home to be with his Savior and Lord March 14, 2013, after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Kennebunk, to Perley C. Hardy and Marion Towne Hardy.
He grew up in Bangor and was a graduate of Bangor High School, received his bachelor degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Southern California and his master’s degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. John married Lois Elizabeth Geary, Aug. 7, 1957. His career was varied working for McDonnell Douglas, Dupont, Hamilton Standard, Rockwood, Maremont Corp. and Electrodyne. While he was at Hamilton Standard, he was instrumental in the development of the Apollo spacesuit. In 1983, wanting to have a family business, he and Lois opened La-Z Boy Showcase Shoppes, South Portland. Twelve years later they moved to the current location in Scarborough. John was a very kind and generous man, who was a good friend and mentor to many. He was a member of South Gorham Baptist Church for 36 years and played a major role in supporting Greater Portland Christian School. He adored his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a devoted husband, loving father and a special Bumpa.
John was predeceased by his parents; and daughter, Rebecca Hardy Philbrick, in 2009. Surviving are his wife, Lois Geary Hardy of South Portland; son, John C. Hardy Jr. and wife, Catherine T. Hardy, of Standish; son, Timothy E. Hardy and wife, Pollyanna Hardy, of Gorham; daughter, Elizabeth A. Hardy and partner, Susan G. Coffin, of Portland; dear son-in-law, Robert D. Philbrick of Scarborough; sister, Dorothy Swaithes; sister, Ruth Penney of Brewer; grandchildren, Natasha Balzano, Jeffrey Greaves, Jason, Ian, Kevin and Maria Philbrick, Marissa Hardy Morrison, Timothy and Christopher Hardy, and Taryn and Bryce Coffin; and great-grandchild, Tyler Cushman Balzano.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 22, at South Gorham Baptist Church, 53 County Road, Gorham, where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23.
