BANGOR, Maine — An old sewer line broke under Lincoln Street and the water washed away the dirt under the roadway, which eventually gave way and created a large hole over the weekend, according to a Bangor Public Works employee.
“We’re going to dig it out, fix the problem and fill it back in,” Steve Taylor, an equipment operator for the city, said Monday morning. He was one of six working to repair the approximately 6- by 4-foot hole.
Traffic on Lincoln Street was detoured all day while crews made a larger hole, climbed down inside to fix the leaking sewer line and then filled the larger hole — estimated at about 20- by 15-feet — with cement. The road remained closed Monday evening.
Workers fixed a similar hole about halfway up David Street, which is four streets down and located next to Dunkin’ Donuts, Taylor said.
