Ever since our son was a baby, we have tried to get him to gain weight. For years, he always ranked in the lowest percentile for weight. His father was that way, too, and so were many other boys in our family, so we weren’t too concerned.
The struggle for our son to gain weight went on for years, but now, at age 10, he is a respectable 65 pounds. That probably sounds super skinny to many of you parents, but we are happy he continues to gain weight and no longer looks like we don’t feed him.
Some of the ways doctors suggested we help him gain some pounds included adding olive oil to his food, letting him eat pudding and other high-calorie foods. For my husband and me, this quickly evolved into letting him eat almost anything he liked that had extra calories, including what many sources consider “The Worst Foods to Feed Your Child.”
We supplemented his weight-gain plan with vitamins and the fruits and veggies he would eat (in the early days there were not many), and we already had another thing going for us: He loves drinking milk. In fact, he drinks so much milk that it might be cheaper for us to buy a cow.
But now that he’s older and at a stable weight, it’s time to make some big changes. We need to find healthy foods that taste good to him and stop buying unhealthy foods.
