ABBOT – Douglas L. Ellis Jr. passed away March 10, 2013, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born June 19, 1925, in Oakland, to Douglas and Macy Ellis.

Douglas served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He received a Purple Heart during his service. While stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, he met his first wife, Jean A. Harrington. Of this marriage there were five children, Douglas L. Ellis II of Orono, Mary Ann Carmichael of Texas, Edward Ellis, and twins, Janette Ellis and Jeanne Bitzan of Alaska. Through his children, he has eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. When Doug left the military he settled with his family in Haines, Alaska, living on a homestead at the end of Lutak Inlet near Chilkoot River. Here he raised his family and lived a subsistent lifestyle while working at the pump station/tank farm. After 20 years in Alaska he retired from civil service and returned to his home state of Maine. In 1972 he separated from wife Jean A. Ellis and later went on to marry Marge Beaupre. From this union he acquired three stepdaughters, Carol Novellino, Sharon Dunaway and Lisa Brown. Douglas Ellis was reunited with his children after 40 years. He spent the last year of his life getting to know them again. It was a year they will always treasure. Doug’s heart was in Alaska, where he would hunt for moose, bear and caribou; fishing the rivers and ocean. He loved the New York Yankees and spending time at his camp with his children. It was at this camp in Maine where he would sit and listen to the loons soothing call which would bring him peace.

Also surviving is his sister, Connie Carpenter and family; nephew, Basil Patterson and family; and nieces, Nancy, daughter of Douglas’ brother Richard, and Macy Larrabbee and family. He was predeceased by his son, Edward Ellis; parents, Douglas and Macy Ellis; brother, Richard Ellis; sisters, Maxine, Barbara and Louise; and ex-wife, Jean Ellis.
