BELFAST, Maine — A convicted sex offender from Lincolnville told a young store clerk Saturday that he was having a bad day and needed a hug just before he groped her, according to police.
Glenn Reed, 65, of Lincolnville was arrested Monday and charged with unlawful sexual touching, assault and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident, which took place at a Belfast store that police are not naming.
Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said Tuesday morning that after Reed asked the young woman working at the register for a hug, she came out from behind the counter to give him one. Then Reed proceeded to assault her, the chief said.
“He tried to kiss her on the cheek and the neck area. Then he fondled her buttocks,” McFadden said. “He said some sexually charged comments.”
The young woman immediately pulled away from Reed, McFadden said.
After the initial groping occurred, the clerk backed away from Reed and asked if she could help him with his purchase. Then he approached her again, tried to kiss her on the lips and grabbed at her breasts.
“Fortunately for us and the victim, and unfortunately for Mr. Reed, video surveillance cameras in the store captured pretty efficiently his contact with the clerk,” McFadden said.
She called police to report her encounter with Reed, and Sgt. John Gibbs investigated and obtained an arrest warrant for him. Chief Ron Young of the Lincolnville Police Department arrested Reed on Monday, and he was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked. He was released later that day on $500 cash bail, with conditions that include having no contact with the victim and staying away from the store, McFadden said.
Reed is listed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry. He was previously convicted of rape in Waldo County Superior Court.
