HARPSWELL, Maine — A local man is being held Monday without bail on a charge of domestic violence aggravated assault after police say he choked his girlfriend until she passed out Sunday night.

Steven Stemp, 36, was arrested at a family member’s house early Monday morning, Lt. Don Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

A sheriff’s deputy went to Brunswick, where Stemp’s girlfriend had fled with her children to a friend’s house after the alleged assault, just after 8 p.m. Sunday.

“She described a physical altercation [in which] he grabbed her by the neck, and she says she kind of blacked out and doesn’t remember much that happened after that,” Foss said of the woman, who was treated at a local hospital.

Stemp is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail pending arraignment on Wednesday, according to an official at the jail.
