TOPSHAM, Maine — Topsham fire, rescue and police were called to the Frank J. Wood Bridge or “Green Bridge” shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday after a passerby spotted a body underneath the bridge and called 911.

Sgt. Robert Ramsay of the Topsham Police Department said police were called to the bridge spanning the Androscoggin River between Topsham and Brunswick at 2:41 p.m.

“The body of an adult male was located under the Green Bridge on the Topsham side, on the rocks,” Ramsay said. The male, who was in his 50s, has been tentatively identified, but the state medical examiner will need to make a positive identification.

The death is not considered suspicious, Ramsay said, adding, “It appears the person jumped off the bridge, but there was no witness to that.”

The medical examiner’s office came to the scene and authorized the body to be taken to Stetson’s Funeral Home in Brunswick.

Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said the department’s rescue and then engine squad responded with a total of about 10 personnel members. The nearby dam wasn’t running, providing rescue workers good access to the rocky area where the man was found, Stockdale said.

The sidewalk that runs alongside the bridge was closed for about an hour, but vehicle traffic continued to pass over the bridge.
