PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Fran Whitten knocked in three runs with a double and a single Sunday, sparking a 16-hit attack that carried the University of Maine to a 13-7 baseball victory over Chicago State.

On Saturday, The Black Bears edged West Virginia 2-1 in 12 innings.

In Sunday’s contest, UMaine (8-9) manufactured a 13-1 lead on the way to the win. Junior Shaun Coughlin (1-1) pitched six innings of two-hit, one-run ball with nine strikeouts and two walks.

On Saturday, Mike Connolly’s single with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Alex Calbick as the University of Maine eked out a win over West Virginia.

The Bears scored once in the ninth to force extra innings, then prevailed behind outstanding pitching to halt a four-game losing streak.

Junior D.J. Voisine (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory. He allowed only one hit and struck out one.

Senior righthander A.J. Bazdanes turned in one of his best performances as a Black Bear, spreading out eight hits and giving up only one run through the first nine innings. He struck out six, walked one and hit a batter.

Colin Gay sparked the offense with four singles and Connolly finished with two hits, including the game-winner.

Paul Pascal incurred the loss for the Mountaineers (6-8), working the last 3 1/3 innings. Starter John Means scattered five hits over eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk. He gave up only one unearned run.

The Bears scored the equalizer in the ninth. The Mountaineers opened the door when Balzano reached on an error to open the inning.

Paul came on to replace Mains and Gay greeted him with a single, his fourth hit of the contest, sending Balzano to third. One out later, Heath stroked an RBI single through the right side to tie it.

West Virginia had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning. With two out, Michael Constantini beat out an infield single and stole second. He scored on Bobby Boyd’s single through the middle.
