RANDOLPH, Maine — A martial arts instructor is facing a sexual abuse charge after being accused of having an affair with one of his students, police said.

Brant Perkins, 53, of Edgecomb, an instructor at the Maine Isshinryu Karate Academy, was taken into custody outside the business on Thursday night, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday.

Detective Joshua Birmingham made the arrest, McCausland said.

The victim is a teenage girl who takes classes at the facility, McCausland said. The state police spokesman did not disclose her age.

A friend of the girl’s family reported the alleged abuse to police earlier this week.

Perkins is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on $2,500 bail.
