FAIRFIELD, Maine — Police have arrested a woman in connection with a theft of $2,100 from a Fairfield church.

Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey, serving as the interim chief in Fairfield, said Thursday that Sarah Runnion-Bareford, 36, of Belgrade was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday.

Runnion-Bareford is suspected of stealing $2,100 on Monday from the United Methodist Church on Skowhegan Road, according to Massey. She is facing up to five years in prison on the Class C charge of felony theft.

Massey said Runnion-Bareford also is suspected of stealing money from other churches in central Maine, and anonymous tips received by police Tuesday were vital in identifying her.

“We got enough info, and we obtained the search warrant Tuesday afternoon for her Belgrade home,” Massey said. A search of the home turned up no checks but $255 in cash, he said.

Runnion-Bareford is being held on $500 bail at the Somerset County Jail Thursday. Her first court appearance is April 10.
