PORTLAND, Maine — Elizabeth Mitchell, CEO of the Maine Health Management Coalition, has been hired to lead a national nonprofit that helps communities improve the quality and reduce the cost of health care.

Mitchell has directed the coalition, an employer-led organization representing purchasers, health providers and insurance plans, and its foundation since 2008. The coalition’s foundation publishes the getbettermaine.org website, which lists quality ratings for Maine hospitals and primary care physician practices in the state.

On May 1, Mitchell will become president and CEO of the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement. She will relocate the network’s office from Pittsburgh to Portland.

“Under Elizabeth Mitchell’s leadership, the Maine Health Management Coalition has become one of the leading regional health improvement collaboratives in the nation,” Harold Miller, outgoing president and CEO of the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement, said in a press release. “Both the federal government and many other states see the coalition’s innovative programs in quality and cost measurement, employer and consumer engagement, and payment and delivery reform as models for improving both the quality and affordability of health care.”

During Mitchell’s tenure at the Maine Health Management Coalition, the organization’s budget grew from $700,000 to more than $6 million. It was recently designated as the fourth organization in the country to receive Medicare claims data that will be used to measure and report performance to physicians.

Last month, the coalition was named the state’s primary partner in a $33 million, three-year federal grant to fund health care innovation in the MaineCare program. Mitchell will remain with the coalition part-time through the spring to assist in the implementation of the grant.

The coalition’s board is working with a national search firm to select a new CEO. Michael DeLorenzo, the coalition’s director of health analytics, has been appointed interim CEO.

Prior to becoming CEO of the coalition, Mitchell worked for MaineHealth and formerly served two terms in the Maine Legislature.
