BANGOR, Maine — Bangor High School athletic director Steve Vanidestine said he was very pleased with the job turned in this season by interim head hockey coach Quinn Paradis.

Paradis led the Rams to a berth in the Eastern Maine Class A final, where they lost to Lewiston 5-1 Tuesday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

Paradis, 30, took over the job from Denis Collins beginning with the Dec. 15 game against Lawrence of Fairfield. He was appointed after an incident on a bus trip to Presque Isle four days earlier that resulted in Collins being suspended.

Collins eventually resigned after the incident was investigated by school officials.

Bangor went 17-4 this season, including a 15-4 mark under Paradis. Three of the losses were to Lewiston.

“Quinn did a real nice job. The kids responded to him. They had a great experience. He did everything we asked and communicated very well,” said Vanidestine. “The coaching staff grew a lot under him and the coaches and the team did a great job representing us.

“We feel good about where we are as a hockey program. We’re well-respected and considered a top-tier program and we’d like to continue that pattern.”

Vanidestine said the controversy surrounding the Collins situation could have derailed the team but it didn’t.

In addition to the players and the coaches, Vanidestine said the “parents and the community” were supportive and played an important role in the program’s success.

“I really appreciated it,” said Vanidestine.

Vanidestine said he will explore the coaching situation at a later date.

Bangor will graduate three of its top four scorers and four of its top eight but the entire defense corps and goalie Rye Powell will return.
