Glenburn man steps down as commander of Maine Air National Guard

AUGUSTA, Maine — Brig. Gen. Stephen M. Atkinson of Glenburn officially retired as commander of the Maine Air National Guard during a change of command ceremony Monday at the Augusta State Armory.

Atkinson, a member of the Maine Air National Guard for 36 years, had served as commander since April 2011. Speakers at the ceremony included Brig. Gen. Gerard Bolduc, the new commander of the Maine Air National Guard, and Brig. Gen. James D. Campbell, Maine adjutant general, according to a press release issued by the Maine Air National Guard.

Atkinson thanked friends and family members during the ceremony. He logged more than 5,400 flight hours during his military career.

Prior to serving as commander of the national guard, Atkinson commanded the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor from 2005-09 before being promoted to brigadier general in July 2009.

His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Aerial Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. printed on August 22, 2017
