WINSLOW, Maine — Jacob Fletcher scored two goals and recorded an assist to help second-ranked John Bapst beat No. 7 Presque Isle 5-1 in an Eastern Maine Class B hockey semifinal Saturday at Sukee Arena.
With the victory the Crusaders of Bangor advanced to a 7 p.m. Tuesday regional championship against No. 1 Messalonskee at Alfond Arena in Orono. Messalonskee of Oakland beat No. 4 Hampden in the first semifinal 7-5.
John Bapst and Messalonskee of Oakland split during the regular season with each team winning on its home ice.
The Eagles beat John Bapst 1-0 in a mutual season-opener on Dec. 8 at Sukee and the Crusaders avenged that defeat with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Eagles on Jan. 12 at Sawyer Arena in Bangor.
In Saturday’s semifinal, Jonathan Cheff chipped in with a goal and assist for the 14-5-1 Crusaders while Nate Reese and Hunter Pate each added a goal. Seth Yachanin contributed two assists and Jaron Leonard made 20 saves.
Tyler Seeley scored on an assist from Adam Flynn for 9-10-1 Presque Isle and Jillian Flynn made 37 saves.
In the first semifinal on Saturday, Chase Cunningham and Jake Dexter each scored two goals to lead the Eagles as they improved to 17-2 and Hampden finished at 12-8.
Messalonskee took a 6-3 lead with about six minutes left in the game when Jared and Chase Cunningham each scored a goal. Hampden answered with two goals to cut it to 6-5 with 46 seconds left but Kalib Bernatchez scored an empty-net about 20 seconds later to secure the victory.
Luther Vom Eigen paced Hampden with two goals.
Messalonskee outshout Hampden 34-23 with Hampden’s Ryan Manning making 29 saves and Messalonskee’s Ben Weeks finishing with 18.
