Hancock County men awaiting trial in Island Falls bank robbery case

ISLAND FALLS, Maine — Two Hancock County men accused of robbing a bank in Island Falls last March are still awaiting a jury trial in the case but have made bail and are free while awaiting the proceedings.

Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said earlier this week that a trial date for Joseph Fallica, 22, of Trenton and Clinton Michaud, 23, of Ellsworth has not been set.

The two are accused of robbing the Island Falls branch of Katahdin Trust Co. on March 6, 2012. A lone man dressed from head to toe in black allegedly entered the facility, demanded money and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash in a blue bag that he had brought with him. No weapon was shown and only two bank tellers were in the building at the time.

State police believe that Fallica was the suspect who went into the bank and that Michaud, a former resident of Island Falls, drove the Jeep the pair used to leave the crime scene, according to information provided by Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said impressions taken of tire tracks left behind by the getaway vehicle, which was parked between two nearby potato houses, led a team of state police detectives and troopers to the suspects.

He said the tracks were connected to a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee belonging to Michaud’s girlfriend, who was not charged in connection with the robbery.

The two were arrested three days later. They made an initial appearance to answer to the charges in Aroostook County Superior Court, where bail was set at $50,000 surety or $10,000 cash with numerous conditions for each suspect, including that the two men not have any contact with each other and that they have a court-appointed custodian supervise them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
