BANGOR, Maine — Police reportedly have taken a human fetus into evidence after a woman walked through Pickering Square carrying it in a bag Friday afternoon. There have been no arrests and no one was taken into custody, Sgt. Bob Bishop said Friday night.

Investigators are releasing few details aside from what Lt. Tim Reid, who heads the department’s Criminal Investigation Division, revealed in a brief written statement Friday evening.

At 2:06 p.m., police received reports of a woman walking through Pickering Square while carrying a bag with a fetus in it. Investigators reportedly retrieved a fetus, but details of why it was being carried were withheld.

Investigators also went to High Street, which was closed briefly, around the same time as part of the investigation according to Sgt. Garry Higgins.

Bishop said the fetus would be taken to the medical examiner’s office on Monday.
