New cross-country ski event in Bangor this weekend

Posted Feb. 27, 2013, at 11:15 a.m.

The Penobscot Ski Bash, an afternoon of family fun on cross-country skis, will be held for the first time from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

The event — sponsored by Bangor Parks and Recreation, Penobscot Valley Ski Club, Healthy Hometowns and Bangor Health and Wellness, with additional support from Darling’s — was originally planned for last winter but was canceled due to lack of snow. Organizers intend for it to be an annual event.

“The nice thing about the golf course is the rolling terrain that’s great for beginners and experienced skiers,” Daniel Perkins, co-chair of the PVSC Nordic committee.

For those new to the sport, more than 100 pairs of cross-country skis, along with boots and poles, will be available to use free of charge, courtesy of Healthy Hometowns. And for those not interested in skiing, a few pairs of snowshoes will also be available to try for free.

The event will feature a wide variety of activities to try — all on skis — including a radar speed trap, adventure trail, obstacle course, scavenger hunt, beanbag biathlon and laser biathlon. A bonfire and snacks will also be available.

Races of different lengths will be held at the end of the day, starting at 3 p.m. Registration is not required.

“Our hope is to provide folks opportunities to get outside and enjoy the fun, active sport of cross-country skiing,” said Lauren Jacobs, the central Maine Healthy Hometowns coach in a recent press release. “The Penobscot Ski Bash is happening thanks to the generous support of many local volunteers. They are excited to share their love of the sport and show off the beautiful ski trails in this area.”

“I think our club has made a big push in the past couple to expand the cross-country ski trails in the area,” said Perkins. “We now groom trails in Orono, Old Town, Bangor and Winterport … we’re trying to put more effort into cross-country skiing and put the word out there.”
