BANGOR, Maine — The local man police say is responsible for more than half a dozen downtown burglaries last summer was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Jonathan Matute, 19, of Bangor was indicted on eight counts each of burglary and theft by unauthorized taking.

His arraignment date has not been set.

Matute is charged with burglaries reported July 21 at the Coe Building on Main Street and two days later at a Harlow Street office building. Cash, cameras, computer equipment and other electronics were reported stolen, according to previously published reports.

Matute was arrested Aug.1 in Broward County, Fla., according to a previously published report. He was taken into custody in that state after a Sears store contacted police about a theft of tools. Matute is alleged to have assaulted a security officer before being taken into custody.

A four-door Buick Century reported stolen from the University of Maine on July 26 was recovered, Bangor police said at the time of Matute’s arrest.

Matute returned to Maine from Florida late last year and is free on $500 cash bail, according to the Penobscot County district attorney’s office.

He was charged with battery and grand theft auto in Florida, according to a previously published report. The status of those charges was not available Wednesday.

In an unrelated case, three people were indicted in connection with an alleged attack Jan. 3 on a 22-year-old man on Coombs Street in Bangor.
