ORONO, Maine — University of Maine police went to Hart Hall for a noise complaint late Friday night and found an abandoned backpack with three bottles of alcohol, marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia inside, spokeswoman Margaret Nagel said Tuesday.

“No one claimed to know whose it was,” she said.

It didn’t take officers long to determine who owned the backpack since it contained items that listed the owner’s name, Nagel said.

Police found the backpack at around 11:15 p.m. Friday and could see it held a bottle of Bacardi 151. After searching inside for the owner’s identification, officers also found a pot pipe with marijuana residue, two containers that contained a small amount of pot and “a name on an article,” Nagel said. She did not indicate what the article was.

Christy Smith, 20, a resident of York Hall, was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana, the spokeswoman said. She also was referred to judicial affairs for the alcohol, Nagel said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
