Falmouth turns in dominating performance, beats York in WM ‘B’ boys title game

By Michael Hoffer, The Forecaster

PORTLAND—Falmouth left no doubt.

It’s the best boys’ basketball team in the state of Maine.

Regardless of class.

At least it looked that way after a 21-point evisceration of its top challenger, York, in the Western Class B Final Saturday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The top-ranked Yachtsmen trailed for all of 19 seconds and put on a display of speed, strength and athleticism that left the second-ranked Wildcats simply shaking their heads, as Falmouth went on to a 67-46 victory, advancing to the Class B Final Friday evening against Medomak Valley in Portland.

Sophomore Jack Simonds canned the first of his five 3-pointers to help Falmouth open a 15-7 lead after one quarter. The Yachtsmen stretched that advantage to 32-17 at the break, thanks to 13 points from Simonds, a superb all-around effort from senior sparkplug Grant Burfeind and a boost from freshman Thomas Coyne off the bench.

When Falmouth erupted on 17-3 third period run, it was all but over and the Yachtsmen sailed home to the easy win, avenging its one loss from the regular season (Feb. 5, in York).

Falmouth got 19 points from Simonds, 17 from Burfiend and 11 from Coyne and improved to 20-1.

The Wildcats’ season ended at 19-2. They were paced by 16 points apiece from seniors Zach Leal and Aaron Todd.
