DeLAND, Fla. — Junior righthander Tommy Lawrence scattered eight hits over eight innings and allowed only one run Friday night to lead the University of Maine to a 7-1 baseball victory over Stetson University.

Lawrence (1-0) struck out six and did not walk a batter before Shaun Coughlin worked a scoreless ninth inning for the 1-5 Black Bears.

Sophomore Scott Heath of Westbrook paced a 13-hit attack with four singles and four RBIs. Junior Troy Black (RBI) and senior Mike Fransoso each collected three singles for UMaine.

Josh Powers (0-1) took the loss, allowing nine hits and three runs through seven innings. However, the Bears broke open what had been a 1-0 game with two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth.

Patrick Mazeika singled three times to pace the Hatters (2-3), while Tyler Bocock stroked an RBI double.

UMaine took the upper hand in the eighth. Black singled up the middle and raced to third on Colin Gay’s single. Sam Balzano of Portland brought in the first run with a fielder’s choice, then Fransoso and Heath (RBI) stroked singles.

Black had a run-scoring bunt single in the ninth and Heath rapped a two-run single.
