Vermont men snap Maine’s 3-game winning streak

BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Vermont Catamounts beat the Maine men’s basketball team 73-61 to snap the Black Bears’ three-game winning streak Wednesday night at Patrick Gym.

Vermont improved to 17-9 overall and 10-4 in America East while Maine slipped to 11-16 and 6-8, respectively.

Zarko Valjarevic paced Maine with 14 points. Alasdair Fraser finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and a block, and joined former great Jeff Cross (1981-84) as the only players in Maine history to notch 500 rebounds and 100 career blocks, as he now has 547 rebounds and 100 blocks.

Xavier Pollard added 10 points and four assists.

Vermont opened the second half on a 7-2 run, taking a 37-28 lead with 18:30 left.

Maine scored the next eight points, courtesy of two Mike Allison free throws, a Justin Edwards 3-pointer and a Pollard fast break layup and free throw.

A Valjarevic 3-pointer gave the Black Bears a 39-37 lead with just under 16 minutes left.

The teams exchanged baskets until Shaun Lawton found a cutting Allison, who made the layup and got fouled. He converted the free throw to give Maine a 49-46 lead with 11:26 left.

The Black Bears scored six out of the next seven points to take a 55-47 lead with 9:29 left.

Vermont answered with a run, taking a 60-56 lead with 5:20 left.

Fraser responded with a jumper, but the Catamounts scored the next seven points to take a 67-58 lead with two minutes left and push the game just out of reach of the Black Bears.

For the game, Maine shot 41 percent from the field while Vermont shot 43 percent. The Catamounts held a 40-27 edge in rebounding.

Brian Voelkel had four points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.
