HANCOCK – Frances “Evelyn” West Tuttle passed away Feb. 18, 2013, after living 91 wonderful years. Frances was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Steuben, to Nancy (Pinkham) West and Emory West.
Frances grew up in Steuben as one of five children of Nancy and Emory; when she lost her mother at a young age, she became the mother figure to the other children, as well as helping to raise her stepsiblings and half siblings later on. Her sister Thelma says she was not only a wonderful sister, but also a loving and caring mother and a best friend. Frances was also a loving devoted mother to her only daughter, Nancy Forsythe. Frances played a large role in raising every generation of her family from her siblings to her great-great-granddaughter, Haley Abbott. Frances and her husband, Allen Tuttle, were married Feb. 15, 1941, spent many years working at Stinson’s Seafood factory before taking over ownership of Tuttle’s Store with her husband, Allen. The two of them spent many long, happy days together running the store, providing for the needs of the community – even if that meant working on holidays like Christmas. Frances always had room in her home and her heart for everyone; for her sister, Evelyn, who wanted to attend the local high school near Frances, or her niece, Ellen, who spent so much time visiting she was like a second daughter. Frances always had extra room for her grandchildren, Allen Forsythe and Jane Veinot, as well as building a playroom on the back deck of Tuttle’s Store for her great-granddaughter, Kelsey Abbott. After Frances lost her husband and later retired from the store, she was able to spend even more time doting on her family. She especially enjoyed spending afternoons with her great-grandson, Kameron Veinot, and later with her great-great-granddaughter, Haley Abbott. Frances always found great enjoyment with the younger generations of her family. In every interaction with Frances, she passed on her wit and wisdom in easy conversation. One never realized the lesson she taught until after the conversation had long passed. She was never ill tempered and was always the first to help another in need.
Frances was predeceased by her parents; husband, Allen; brothers, Philip, William and Robert West; and sister, Carmen Dorr. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy; grandchildren, Allen and Jane; great-granddaughter, Kelsey and husband, Matthew, and daughter, Haley; favorite great-grandson, Kameron; sister, Thelma and children and grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn, Betty and Judy; brothers, Clifford and Richard, and their families; niece, Ellen and husband, and children and grandchildren; nephew, Donald and son, William; as well as many extended relatives and friends.
