Barbara (Smith) Bagley

VEAZIE and BANGOR – Barbara (Smith) Bagley, 89, passed away peacefully Feb. 19, 2013, in Bangor, with her loving family by her side. She was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Bangor, daughter of Stephen and Caroline (Schoppe) Smith.
She grew up in Orono on the family farm on Park Street. She attended Orono schools and graduated from Orono High School, where she met the love of her life, Holand Bagley. After graduation, Barbara attended Husson College and worked at Standard Shoe Co., Bangor. Holand enlisted in the Army and while he was overseas, they kept in touch through letters and postcards. When Holand returned from the war, they were engaged and on June 23, 1946, they were married. They were devoted to each other and together raised five children in a happy home filled with abundant love. Barbara was a homemaker and caregiver her entire life. She was involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and was an active member of Orono Methodist Church and Veazie Congregational Church, where she was a member of Ladies Aid. She enjoyed spending time at camp at Spragues Falls in Cherryfield, traveling Downeast and out-of-state to visit relatives. One of her most memorable trips was when she visited National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. She loved to read, knit, crochet, create holiday crafts, sew and cook. She was a great cook, always ready to try out a new recipe – her date squares and pistachio bars were the best. Maybe that is why so many of her children and grandchildren are such great cooks. Thanks Mom and Gram. She took pride in planning and cooking for many large family gatherings, including holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions. She loved music and in her earlier years, played the guitar and sang. Barbara will be remembered for her generosity, her kind heart, and her sense of humor that she exhibited up until the very end. She treasured her family and friends and was a very loving and caring person. She loved children, flowers, dogs and life in general.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Mary Caroline Skaggs and her husband, Tom, of Stillwater and their children, Aaron, Amy, Jeff, Jenny and Jori; sons, David R. Bagley and his wife, Mary, of Veazie and their children, Michael and Alex; Harvey C. Bagley and his wife, Marion, of Veazie and their children, Christopher and Kelly; and Robert L. Bagley and his wife, Michelle, of Glenburn and their children, Amanda and Benjamin. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, several sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Holand; daughter, Betsy; and brothers, Philip and Wellington Smith. She now joins Holand and Betsy in heaven, where we are sure she will be cooking and caring for someone. Rest in peace, Mom. The family thanks the wonderful staff at Ross Manor for their loving care of Barbara throughout the past several years. They were like family to her. They also thank the doctors and nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Hospice of Eastern Maine for their care during her recent illness.
