Berwick Academy fire squelched; fire curtain stops blaze on school stage

By Christina Higginbotham, Foster's Daily Democrat

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — A fire curtain dropped down in the nick of time on the stage of the Patricia Baldwin Whipple Arts Center saving the building from extensive damage from a two -alarm fire that broke out at Berwick Academy late Tuesday afternoon.

There were no injuries.

Students had been preparing for a play when extra lights that had been brought in set a stage curtain on fire.

The fire curtain contained the blaze.

Mutual aid from surrounding communities, including South Berwick and Berwick, and Rollinsford, Dover and Somersworth, N.H., were called to the scene at 4:02 p.m.

Students were ordered to go to buildings that were farthest away from the fire.

According to South Berwick Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Rousselle, the fire was extinguished and well under control by 5 p.m., but crews were still on the scene at that time.
