Defending WM champ Lake Region cruises past Freeport

PORTLAND—The defending Western Class B champion Lake Region girls’ basketball team started its title defense and quest for that elusive Gold Ball Tuesday evening at the Portland Exposition Building and gave the rest of the regional field little reason to think any other team will still be playing in the month of March.

Facing No. 8 Freeport, playing in its first ever quarterfinal round game in Class B, the top-ranked Lakers put their victory on ice quickly, scoring the game’s first 13 points and never looking back en route to a 65-29 victory.

The Falcons (13-7) simply had no answers for Lake Region junior standout Tiana-Jo Carter, nor senior Kelsey Winslow, who made successive hoops on inbounds passes to start the scoring and get the ball rolling for the Lakers, who improved to 17-2 and advanced to play Greely in the semifinals Thursday at 4:30 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Carter finished with a dazzling stat line of 17 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Winslow added 17 points and 10 blocks.

Freeport was paced by junior standout Nina Davenport, who had 11 points.
