GLENBURN, Maine — A local man who reportedly didn’t heed warnings when police advised him not to return to his girlfriend’s residence Monday night was arrested early Tuesday.

Joshua McAuliffe, 32, of Glenburn, whom area law enforcement have had previous dealings with, was intoxicated when Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies were called to the home just after 8 p.m., according to Deputy Steve Saucier.

The call came in as a domestic dispute, but no assault ever transpired, Saucier said. Deputies reportedly advised McAuliffe to leave the home and he complied.

But at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, McAuliffe returned, and Saucier said the man was even more intoxicated than when he was sent on his way earlier.

“Before we arrived he cut himself with a knife across the neck,” Saucier said.

When paramedics tried to give McAuliffe medical attention, he allegedly became aggressive toward them and Saucier, resulting in an altercation between the suspect and the deputy.

Saucier was able to get McAuliffe under control and into handcuffs, he said. McAuliffe was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for a mental evaluation before being brought to Penobscot County Jail.

The woman was the only person inside the house during the incident, Saucier said.

McAuliffe is facing charges of assault, resisting arrest, criminal threatening and criminal trespass. He remained at the jail Tuesday afternoon and is due in court March 21.

According to Bangor Daily News archives, McAuliffe was arrested on assault and burglary charges after he was accused of forcing his way into an acquaintance’s Bangor apartment and assaulting the tenants last July.

In addition to that, he served 30 days in jail on an assault charge in 2000, the archives state.

McAuliffe is a Bangor-area boxer who embarked on a professional career in 2010. He has four Golden Gloves New England tournament titles to his credit, according to BDN archives.
