BANGOR, Maine — The Washburn boys basketball team survived a scare Monday afternoon from a talented, athletic Bangor Christian squad.

Senior guard Mitch Worcester scored 27 second-half points as the second-ranked Beavers edged the No. 7 Patriots 70-69 in a Class D quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

Washburn will face No. 3 Central Aroostook in Thursday’s semifinals. The Beavers beat the Panthers twice in the regular season.

Bangor Christian held Worcester in check throughout the first half, but he exploded in the second, and his two free throws with 27 seconds left provided the winning margin.

A tap-in at the buzzer by BC’s Kenneth Van Dine came up short.

Noah Caron tallied 10 points for the 19-1 Beavers while Cameron Bragg also had 10 and Nicholas Bragg nine.

For the 13-7 Patriots, Seth Pearson led the way with 18 points while Ben Bragg had 10.
