EDDINGTON – Angela V. Byther, 91, died peacefully Feb. 16, 2013, in the company of her caring children. She was born July 12, 1921, in Milo, the daughter of Paul and Alta Valente.
Angela was most proud of her Italian heritage and valued family reunions immensely. Angela was the first hot lunch cook at Eddington School and worked many years as a secretary for the Abnaki Girl Scout Council. She loved gardening, quilting, sewing, knitting, painting and crafting. Particular pride was given to the many crafts she created for the annual church fair in support of North Brewer-Eddington United Methodist Church, of which she was a member and loved so dearly. Her husband Edward and she enjoyed many summers at their camp on Beach Hill Pond, Otis, and spent many happy years in Florida during the winter months. The last 15 years “The Big Seven” – Angela, her brothers and sisters – spent summers together at the family cottage on Gouldsboro Point.
Lovingly referred to as the “Queen Bee” of the Valente family, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Ralph Russell of Eddington and Judy and John Somes of Eddington; and son, Edward William Byther and wife, Laura, of Scarborough. Angela leaves behind nine grandchildren, Mark and Jennifer Russell of Waterboro, Scott and Lucretia Russell of Dayton, Kim and husband, Matt Jerry, of Standish, Amy Somes of Eddington, Jeremy and wife, Amy T. Somes, of Windham, Adam and wife, Meagan Somes, of Eddington, Brad Byther of Biddeford, Ryan Byther of Scarborough and Ben Byther of Westbrook. Angela has 21 great-grandchildren. Angela will be sadly missed by her remaining six siblings, Georgia Hall of Bristol, Conn., Mary Guminiak of East Hartford, Conn., Henry Valente of Windham, Lewis Valente of Milo, Orrin and wife, Helen Valente, of Cumberland Center and Virgil Valente of Milo. In addition to her parents and husband, Angela was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Nellie Valente, Kathryn Valente and Janet Valente; and brothers-in-law, Vernon Hall and Ted Guminiak.
