Valjarevic sparks UMaine men’s basketball team past Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Zarko Valjarevic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the University of Maine men’s basketball team to a 64-60 win at Binghamton on Saturday night at the Events Center. Maine improves to 11-15 on the year and 6-7 in America East play while Binghamton falls to 3-23 and 1-12 in league play.

Valjarevic gave the Black Bears a 33-20 halftime lead as he went 4-7 from long range and sank all six of his free throw attempts. Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) had five points and eight rebounds while Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) added six points and three assists.

Maine shot 37.9 percent from the field in the first half while holding Binghamton to 21.2 percent.

Binghamton came storming back in the second half, cutting the lead to 40-35 with 14:06 left and with Maine up 43-37, Lawton stole the ball and laid it in for a key bucket to stop the Binghamton run.

Maine recovered and took a 53-43 lead on an Alasdair Fraser free throw with 7:08 remaining, but once again the Bearcats came back and closed the lead to 54-49.

Fraser answered with a jumper just inside the free throw line and a Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) jumper moments later made it 58-51 with 2:42 left.

Binghamton responded with a bucket but Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) made two free throws to stretch it back to seven with just over two minutes remaining.

The Black Bears got a stop on the defensive end but could not convert. Binghamton sank a pair of free throws and Edwards missed a shot for Maine. Till Gloger (Bochum, Germany) gathered the rebound and gave it to Pollard who was promptly fouled. He made one free throw to make it 61-55 with 54 seconds left.

Binghamton converted a free throw but missed the second and the Black Bears got the rebound. Pollard got fouled and sank a free throw to seal the win.

Fraser added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Edwards finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
