BANGOR, Maine — Junior guard Jon Phelps nailed four 3-pointers for Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor to spark a 48-42 Eastern Maine Class B boys basketball victory over Winslow at the Bangor Auditorium on Friday night.
The victorious third-seeded Trojans (16-3) will play the winner of the 9 a.m. Saturday game between No. 2 Presque Isle and No. 7 Waterville.
“It’s all about the team,” said Phelps about his shooting. All he had to do was “just stay calm.”
He hit four 3-pointers in the game, but his most important basket was a two-pointer with 4:43 remaining in the game to put MDI ahead for good at 36-35.
The No. 6 Black Raiders (14-6) stayed close, trailing by only two at 42-40 before the Trojans hit six of their eight free throws in the last two minutes to secure the win.
Junior guard Trevor Lovely scored in the middle of that free-throw run, but 3-point attempts in the last 30 seconds by sophomore guard Nason Lanphier and Lovely missed and the Trojans finally were able to run out the clock.
Lanphier had given Winslow an early 4-0 lead with a pair of field goals and Lovely posted a game-high 17 points to keep the Raiders thinking of an upset.
“Lovely and Lanphier can really play,” said MDI coach Justin Norwood. “I don’t know any team that’s going to want to face them over the next couple of years.”
Phelps finished with 16 points to lead the Trojans, senior center Adam Gray added 11 points senior guard Keegan McKim had eight, and junior forward Ben Walls had seven.
Sophomore center Justin Martin registered 10 points for Winslow, and Lanphier finished with seven.
After Lanphier gave Winslow the first lead, MDI went on a 21-4 run. Phelps hit two of his 3-pointers in that run, and Gray posted eight points.
Winslow kept coming back, though, until MDI regained control, especially on the defensive boards, to finish the game.
“We just had to keep going,” said Phelps, “not give up and have fun.”
“Survive and advance,” said Norwood. “It wasn’t a great game, but we made our free throws when we needed them.”
