Rosalie M. Swenson

HAMPDEN – Rosalie Margaret Swenson “Rose” passed peacefully at home the afternoon of Feb. 13, 2013. She was born Rosalie Margaret Aldrich, July 16, 1928, in Bangor, to parents Albert G. and Elizabeth (Perry) Aldrich.
She was raised in a French-speaking home in Bangor, attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, and was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rose was a warm homemaker and a doting wife and mother. She met her husband, whom she called “Gussie” on the deck of his Navy boat during a public tour. Gus saw Rose, turned to his fellow sailor, and said “See her? That’s the woman I’m going to marry.” Sure enough, they were married Oct. 21, 1948, and were rarely apart from one another for 64 happy years. She was a hard worker and a small business owner. For more than 50 years, she and her husband ran Swenson Carpet on Main Road in Hampden. In addition to building the business from the ground up, they built their home on Patterson Street in Hampden together – living in a tarp-covered foundation while piecing together what would become their family’s roof. Every day for as long as anyone can remember she braided her hair in two long braids wrapped elegantly around her head. It was the simple things that brought her peace and pleasure; she loved to read, garden and cook. Rose was an ace candlepin bowler, and participated in many Bangor area leagues with her family and friends. But most of all, she loved spending time at the family camp on Swan Lake, sitting quietly, listening to the loons.
Rose is survived by her beloved family: husband, Lawrence Swenson of Hampden; sons, Charles Swenson of Bangor, Marc Swenson of Bangor and Kirk Swenson of Hampden; grandchildren, Jennifer Swenson, Jessica Swenson, Adam Swenson and Daniel Swenson; one sister, Jean Sylvia Aldrich; one brother, Paul Sumner Aldrich; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; one sister, Irene Phyllis Harnish; and one brother, Joseph Gilman Aldrich.
A graveside service will be held in the springtime at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden, at a date and time to be announced. Those who wish to remember Rosalie in a special way may make contributions to Relay for Life, care of Pat Tate, 24 Garfield Ave., Brewer, ME 04412. Private messages of condolence and memories may be shared through
