BANGOR, Maine — The Lewiston High School Blue Devils all but sewed up the top seed for the Eastern Maine Class A schoolboy hockey playoffs Thursday night.
The Blue Devils parlayed junior left wing Cam Marquis’ second-period goal, junior defenseman Patrick DeBlois’ third-period, power-play goal and senior goalie Evan Bourassa’s 18 saves into a 2-0 win over Bangor at Sawyer Arena.
It was a battle of the top two teams in the Heal Points standings and the Blue Devils padded their lead by sweeping the season series with the Rams.
Lewiston beat Bangor 5-2 on Jan. 21 in Lewiston and Thursday’s victory snapped Bangor’s four-game winning streak.
Lewiston is now 13-3-1 with a game remaining at Thornton Academy of Saco while the 12-3 Rams have games left with Edward Little of Auburn, Brewer and St. Dominic of Auburn.
Marquis, parked in the left faceoff circle, broke a scoreless deadlock at the 9:00 mark of the second period when he deflected Ethan Melvin’s point shot into the short-side corner past Bangor goalie Rye Powell.
Bourassa protected the lead 1:50 into the third period when he held his ground and got his blocker on Jake Fournier’s backhander after Fournier maneuvered past a Lewiston defenseman and broke in across the low slot.
DeBlois added an insurance goal at the 7:29 mark of the final period when his snap shot from the right point deflected off a stick and knuckled over Powell’s head.
The Rams shot themselves in the foot by taking eight consecutive penalties that left them shorthanded for 16 minutes of the game’s final 31:55.
Powell finished with 22 stops in a stellar performance.
Bangor was without leading scorer and All-State winger Parker Sanderson, who is suffering from an injury.
