ELLSWORTH – Russell E. Burns Sr., 86, died Feb. 14, 2013, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. He was born June 4, 1926, on Swans Island, a son of Charles and Jeannie (Martin) Burns Sr.
Russell was the youngest of eight children. He attended Swans Island schools. On May 21, 1948, he married his first wife of 52 years, Alice May Burns, she died in 2000. He married Margaret Weed Dec. 15, 2004, in Ellsworth. Russell worked as a lobster fisherman, worked as the telephone man on Swans Island for 31 years, and owned his own boat yard. He was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. He loved to dance, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Joyce; son, Rusty; two grandchildren, Molly and Jarred; six great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Julie, Cheryl, James and Timothy; six stepgrandchildren, two great-stepgrandchildren; and sisters, Charlene and Helene. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Alice; grandson, Gabriel; brothers, Buster, Wilson and Norman; and sisters, Marguritte and Mary. A special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and a special thanks to a friend who helped him with his wheelchair at the dances.
A funeral service will be held noon Monday, Feb. 18, at Atlantic Baptist Church, Swans Island. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swans Island.
