BELFAST, Maine — The man police believe is responsible for committing six late-night burglaries last fall in Belfast — at times stealing wallets from pants hanging on bedposts while residents slept inches away — was among the 36 people indicted this quarter by the Waldo County Grand Jury.

Jason Beal, 23, of Belfast is accused of breaking into the homes in November. Police called the burglaries “incredibly dangerous,” as they unnerved city residents and prompted many to tell Chief Michael McFadden of the Belfast Police Department that they were sleeping with a gun under the pillow while the burglar remained at large.

In one instance, an elderly woman awoke during the burglary and yelled at the person to get out of her house, then barricaded herself in a room for hours until she felt safe enough to come out and contact police.

Beal was charged with the crimes based on DNA evidence found on a screwdriver and cigarette butt that were collected at the scene of one of the burglaries, police said.

According to the indictment lists, which were handed down Wednesday afternoon, the grand jury charged Beal with six counts of burglary and six counts of theft by unauthorized taking, related to the burglaries.
